MODOC Search Scope and Limits
The official MODOC Offender Search covers people supervised by the Missouri Department of Corrections. That group includes people in a state institution and people outside prison on active probation or parole. First- and last-name searches include aliases. The page also gives a precise time showing when its data was current. Some records may be withheld for safety, security, or confidentiality.
A DOC master number is the best match key. MODOC describes it as a unique number that stays with a person for life. When only a name is known, compare aliases, the court cause number, sentence county, offense, and other identity facts. Never treat the first same-name result as conclusive. The search result describes MODOC jurisdiction, not all custody in Missouri.

That agency-wide view helps keep a state-prison record separate from a county jail roster or a federal locator result.
Use the MODOC Offender Search
The live tool is best when a person is still active with MODOC. Physical release from prison does not end a sentence by itself. Someone on parole or conditional release remains under field supervision and may still appear. A person on MODOC probation can appear even when no prison release is involved.
Follow a careful lookup sequence. Save the search page's data timestamp with any result because status can change after the displayed update.
- Open the official search and read its scope and cautions.
- Use the DOC number when known. Otherwise enter first and last name, then test a documented alias.
- Match the DOC number, identity facts, cause number, county, and sentence details.
- Read whether the assignment is institutional or field based. Field means supervision outside prison, not final discharge.
- Copy each date label exactly, then compare the cause number with the Missouri court case.
The MODOC offender-search form shows the fields available before a search is run.
The form is an active-record doorway. It is not a list of every person ever released by MODOC.
Note: A missing active result can reflect final discharge, a spelling issue, withheld data, timing, or no MODOC jurisdiction.
Final Discharge Leaves Active Search
Release and discharge are different events in Missouri corrections. Release can mean leaving an institution for parole, conditional release, probation after a court program, or another supervised status. Discharge ends MODOC custody and supervision. The live search says plainly that it does not provide information on discharged offenders.
Active outside prison is not discharged. An active field assignment can confirm that prison custody ended while MODOC supervision continues.
A no-result must not be translated into a release date. It cannot confirm departure from a county jail, federal prison, or ICE custody. For a person who may have reached final discharge, move to the nightly historical file and Case.net. A focused records request can resolve a date or status that those sources do not explain.

MODOC Historical Offender Search Route
Missouri's second official tier is the nightly Sunshine Law offender database. It includes people who are or have been under MODOC supervision, with data reaching as far back as 1974. Missouri Courts also describes the split between the active search and the current-or-prior offender file. This makes the bulk file the key self-service route after a final discharge removes the interactive result.
The file is charge-level. One person may have several rows. Group records by DOC ID and read all rows before drawing a conclusion. An incarcerated person can also have field supervision tied to another matter. A sentence-completed flag of Y applies to that row; it does not prove that every sentence is complete.

Its documented codes and date names should be retained in notes so a minimum date is not mistaken for actual release.
Missouri Prison Release Framework
Missouri law creates several routes, and none should be collapsed into one label. Under section 217.690, parole is a Board choice based on whether release can occur without detriment to the community or the person. Eligibility and a hearing do not guarantee approval. Conditions and Division of Probation and Parole supervision can follow.
Section 558.011 sets the ordinary incarceration and conditional-release split for covered term sentences. Misconduct or specified program noncompletion can affect that route. Section 558.041 permits discretionary good-time credit after an institutional recommendation. The Board may then grant administrative parole, but credit is not an automatic promise.
Final discharge is later. Section 217.730 authorizes the Board to issue an order and certificate of discharge when statutory conditions are met. Until then, a person who lives outside prison can remain active in the MODOC offender search.
Conditional release is also not the same as parole. It is a part of many term sentences created by section 558.011. The ordinary split varies with sentence length, but exclusions and later events can govern an individual case. Institutional misconduct can support a petition to extend the conditional-release date, up to the full sentence. Specified program noncompletion can also affect the statutory date. The current calculation must therefore come from MODOC, not from a simple fraction applied to the sentence.
Probation can enter the MODOC data in a different way. A court may order probation after a 120-day program, so that status should not be described as parole from the rest of a prison term. An interstate move or a transfer can also appear among system events without meaning that all custody ended. Each label must be tied to the order, sentence, and custody layer that produced it.
Note: Minimum eligibility, a Board hearing, release approval, physical departure, community supervision, and final discharge are separate milestones.
Missouri Prison Release Money and Clothing
MODOC uses a narrow official meaning for “Release Monies.” Its glossary defines the term as transportation costs provided by the department. The source does not support a statewide cash amount, so no standard gate-payment figure should be assumed.
Release clothing has its own process. Within 30 days of a scheduled release, a family may coordinate one approved clothing-and-shoes package through the institutional case manager under MODOC property guidance. Transitional status may begin six months or less before release or discharge. Reentry centers and case staff help route needs, but those broad programs do not prove any one person's plan.
MODOC Release Trends Need Context
The FY2024 Offender Profile reports 11,455 institutional exits. The total included 2,446 probation exits, 7,335 parole exits, 648 conditional releases, 826 discharges, and 200 other exits. It fell 6.4 percent from FY2023 and 43.2 percent from FY2019.
Only 3,678 were first releases. Within that first-release group, 83.5 percent went to parole, 11.6 percent to conditional or administrative release, and 4.9 percent to discharge. These measures answer different questions. Institutional exits are not all first releases, and neither figure equals final discharges.
MODOC also reported 52,520 people under supervision at fiscal year end, including 13,809 on parole and 38,711 on probation. That population shows why an active offender record can persist well after a prison exit.
The profile also separates openings from closings and people from events. One person may contribute more than one movement during a reporting period, just as one person can occupy several charge rows in the historical file. A sound MODOC released-inmates count must name the fiscal year, the measure, and whether it means all institutional exits, first releases, parole placements, or final discharges. Without those labels, two accurate figures can appear to conflict when they simply count different stages.
Use the published profile for statewide scale, not for a named person's status. An individual release still requires the active record, historical rows, court case, or agency document tied to that person today.
MODOC Release or County Jail Record
Custody type decides where to search. MODOC records sentenced state prisoners and its active supervision clients. A sheriff or local detention authority keeps county-jail booking and release records. The Missouri County Directory routes a county matter to the locality that holds the record. A transfer from a jail to a state prison ends local custody but is not community release.
Federal and immigration custody require different tools. The BOP locator covers federal prisoners from 1982 forward. “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” means only that BOP no longer holds the person. ICE's locator is for current ICE custody or recent release from that system, not a Missouri criminal sentence.

Cross-Check MODOC Releases in Case.net
Missouri Case.net is the statewide court layer for charges, docket events, judgment, and disposition. Search by litigant, filing date, case number, or scheduled hearing. For a MODOC result, the court cause number is the strongest bridge between systems. Match the county and judgment as well. A court order may explain the sentence or later action, but it does not prove the hour of physical release or show whether another agency took custody.
Case.net can persist after a jail roster or active MODOC result no longer appears. Public remote documents generally reach back to July 1, 2023 after a court activated remote access. Older public documents may require a courthouse terminal. A missing document link can mean that no attachment exists or that the user lacks access. Protected parties, cases, and documents can also be confidential.
“Track This Case” can provide email updates for covered cases, with stated exceptions. It is useful for later court events, not as a corrections release alert. Compare the docket with the corrections record, then ask the agency that held the person to confirm the custody event.
Request MODOC Release Records
A focused Sunshine request can seek an existing release entry, status history, sentence-date record, discharge order or certificate, or Board decision. Send MODOC offender-record requests to OD.SunshineRequest@doc.mo.gov. Board records go to ParoleBoard.SunshineRequest@doc.mo.gov. Include the full name, DOC number, date range, court cause number, and a clear description of the record.
Missouri's Chapter 610 process requires a custodian to act as soon as possible and by the end of the third business day. That is a response deadline, not always the production date. Ask for electronic delivery, a fee estimate, code definitions, and all open portions that can be separated from closed material. Medical, mental-health, treatment, and institutional-security information may be withheld under the cited laws.
Section 217.075 treats MODOC offender records as Chapter 610 public records while closing personal medical history, information closed by other law, and internal security material. Section 549.500 separately protects documents prepared or obtained by Parole Board or Probation and Parole staff, although inspection may be allowed for the person, counsel, or another person with a proper interest. A request should seek a named existing record rather than demand the entire parole file.
As of the 2025 fee amendment, section 610.026 caps ordinary paper copies at ten cents per page and limits duplication labor to the average clerical rate. Research may be charged at actual cost using staff who produce the lowest charge. An estimate or prepayment may be required. Those rules do not guarantee that a requested record is open or already compiled.

MODOC Early and Final Discharge
Prison good time and supervision credit are not the same. Earned Compliance Credits under section 217.703 apply to eligible people on supervision. Credits do not accrue while a person is absconding. Court, Board, and Division authority differ, so the official early-discharge explanation is the right place to identify who can act.
